Head Lice Repellant

YAY!!!  Another thing to bring home from school!!  If it isn’t the endless list of colds, viruses and illnesses, the pockets full of wood chips or sand to clog the washing machine, the bags full of unfinished art, it’s the dreaded note that YOU have a child with head lice!!

OH the shame…..

Here are some facts about head lice

  • they prefer CLEAN hair.  So contrary to popular belief, the grubbier your kid, the less likely they are to get them
  • Lice cannot survive off of a human host longer than 24 to 48 hours. If a louse did come off an infested individual and hide in a pillow or hat, it is possible for the louse to infest another individual who uses the pillow or hat
  • Head lice are most commonly found on the scalp, behind the ears and near the neckline at the base of the head.
  • Lice eggs (often called nits). These look like tiny yellow, tan, or brown dots before they hatch. After hatching, the remaining shell looks white or clear.
  • Lice do not carry or transmit any disease
  • Head lice have been around for millions of years, and dried up lice and their eggs have been found on the hair of Egyptian mummies!
  • Lice have a season and you are more likely to get them in the spring and fall
  • Lice hate the smell of tea tree and lavender
  • Lice can not live on pets
  • Yes I did get itchy while writing this piece

Getting rid of lice naturally is for another post but how to avoid them seems almost more important.  Here’s what I did.

EDIT: So have you read about SUPERLICE?? No?  Well it will totally creep you out and make you itchy all over.  Recent studies have shown that almost 98% of lice out breaks in North America are now these SuperLice which no over the counter or prescription strength treatment will kill.  They can also easily survive the winter!! The articles equate it too over use of anti-biotics and super bugs.  We have used the same lice treatment for so long that now it doesn’t work!!  And you know what they now recommend?? Tea Tree and Lavender Essential Oils and diligent daily comb outs of nits …….it is the only thing they have found that gets rid of them.  So good thing we already have this recipe but lets alter it slightly for treatment strength. To treat an infestation:

    1. Double or triple the strength of the spray.
    2. Comb out hair with nit comb every night removing any bugs and nits you find.  Spray the roots well and saturate from root to 3-4 inches of hair.  Keep hair tied back.
    3. In the morning spray hair again before leaving. Continue treatment for 3 – 4 weeks (I KNOW!) to ensure that all egg life cycles (and egg takes 11-14 days to hatch) have completed.
    4. At the end of the treatment return to regular repellent use.
    5. Make sure that everyone in the house is getting sprayed. The lice will find a new more welcome home if another head isn’t a cozy

    A Couple of other Tricks

    • Lice Eggs can be killed with a hot flat iron
    • Lice and eggs dehydrate easily and can be killed with a warm hairdryer.  This time consuming and ultimately damage the hair because every piece f hair needs to be heated for a few minute
    • I have read that dying your hair kills them

None of these treatments would I recommend exclusively but they are a nice add into the arsenal
